The Vital Importance of Tick Checks for Your Dog’s Health and Well-Being

As a responsible pet owner, it’s crucial to prioritize the well-being of your furry companion. One essential aspect of caring for your dog involves regularly checking them for ticks. These pesky parasites can cause a range of health issues for your beloved pet, including Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. In this article, we’ll provide a step-by-step guide on how to check your dog for ticks, ensuring their health and happiness. We’ll also introduce you to some handy products available on Amazon that can assist you in this important task.

Understanding the Dangers of Ticks

Ticks are small, blood-sucking parasites that attach themselves to the skin of animals, including dogs. They can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis. It’s crucial to catch and remove ticks promptly to prevent these illnesses from affecting your furry friend. Ticks are commonly found in tall grass, bushes, and on trees, but can find their way on your pet in any environment.

Regular Inspection Routine

Establishing a regular inspection routine is vital to keeping your dog tick-free. It’s always a good idea to check your dog after a walk or a visit to the park. Here’s a step-by-step guide to checking your dog for ticks:

  1. Find a calm, well-lit area: Choose a quiet spot where your dog feels comfortable and you can easily see their skin.
  2. Gently run your hands through your dog’s fur: Begin by running your hands along your dog’s body, feeling for any small bumps or unusual lumps.
  3. Examine common hiding spots: Pay close attention to areas where ticks are more likely to hide, such as the neck, ears, underbelly, armpits, and between the toes.
  4. Part the fur and inspect the skin: Use your fingers or a comb to part the fur and examine the skin for any tick presence. Be sure to check around the base of the tail as well.
  5. Look for signs of ticks: Ticks can vary in size and color. They may appear as tiny black dots or engorged grayish-brown bumps. Be thorough in your search, as ticks can be as small as a poppy seed.
  6. Remove any ticks: If you find a tick, make sure to completely remove the head and body of the tick. You can use your fingers and pinch where the tick is attached to your dog to, or you can use tick removal tools, such as a tick remover kit or tick twisters, to safely extract it from your dog’s skin. Avoid squeezing or twisting the tick, as this may cause it to regurgitate and increase the risk of disease transmission.
  7. Make sure your pet is professionally groomed on a regular schedule: Dog groomers see and touch every inch of your dog at every appointment, and are trained to find and remove any ticks. If your pet has any ticks on them, your groomer will find them and remove them. Having your dog on a regular grooming schedule means that they’ll be checked for ticks regularly, helping protect your dog from diseases.

Prevention is Key

While checking for ticks is crucial, preventing tick bites is the best way to protect your pet from the dangers of tick bites. There are many ways to prevent fleas and ticks for your dog. Here are a few over-the-counter options we love:

  • Flea collar: The Seresto flea collar is a collar your pet wears that prevents fleas and ticks from attaching to your dog. It kills fleas and ticks on contact, so pests don’t have to bite your dog to die. The Seresto collar lasts up to 8 months, and doesn’t have a smell or leave a residue on your dog. The collar can be removed as needed, but it’s recommended to leave it on for the best results.
  • Topical preventative: K9 Advantix II is a favorite of Hey Gorgeous Grooming. This topical preventative kills and repels fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, all of which can carry diseases that are harmful for your pet. Oral preventatives and other topical preventatives kill pests after they’ve bitten your pet, preventing them from laying eggs or attaching to your pet, but K9 Advantix II repels them without having to be bitten. After a bath, simply open the packaging and apply the formula on the skin in a line starting between the shoulder blades and going down the spine. DO NOT allow your pet to lick it. You can wash any remaining product off two days after application.
  • Oral preventative: Oral preventatives are best prescribed by a veterinarian. The most common brands are Nexgard and Bravecto. Bravecto is available over-the-counter, but it is recommended to consult with a veterinarian before adminstering an oral flea and tick preventative. Oral preventatives are favored by many pet owners because they don’t leave behind any residue, however they don’t kill fleas and ticks until after they’ve bitten your dog. Oral preventatives are safe for puppies, while some topical preventatives shouldn’t be used until your dog is at least 6 months of age.
  • Natural remedies: There are some natural remedies available if you prefer. Brands like Wondercide sell sprays, collars, and topical oils for your pet. They use essential oils to repel fleas and ticks, but aren’t as effective as the previous products mentioned. Fleas and ticks can still land on your pet, and they will not be killed if they bite. Natural remedies decrease the chance of fleas and ticks on your dog, but they do not prevent or kill them.

After you’ve figured out which preventative is best for you and your pet, consult with your veterinarian if you have any further questions or if you need a prescription.

What to do if You’ve Found a Tick

If you’ve found a tick on your dog, you should remove it right away. You can use your hands to remove the tick or use one of the recommended tick removal tools listed earlier in the article. Sometimes the head gets stuck on the dog, so make sure to remove the head and the body of the tick.

Bathe your dog in a flea and tick shampoo to make sure any ticks that may have been missed are taken care of. This is especially recommended if you have a dog with long hair or a large dog. It’s easy to miss ticks when there is a lot of surface area to check.

Keep an eye out for signs of Lyme Disease. If you find an especially engorged tick or multiple ticks on your dog, this is especially important. Even a single tick can spread Lyme Disease, but the chances increase the longer the tick is attached to your dog and the more ticks there are. The most common symptoms are lameness, swollen lymph nodes, joint swelling, fatigue, and loss of appetite. If you notice any of these symptoms after finding and removing ticks from your dog, please contact your veterinarian.
